How to Maintain Lash Extensions & Make Them Last

Lash extensions have been around for a while but I feel like now they’re starting to get more popular. I’ve been getting my lashes done on and off since 2016 and can attest to the fact that they are a major time saver. You can literally wake up, apply your skincare, and go about your day (maybe a little concealer, depending on the night before). With these magical lashes though, comes maintenance. Here are a few tips and products that have helped me take care of my lash extensions!

P.S. – If you’re in the DMV area, check out MadLash in Catonsville! They are my go-to for lash extensions and the studio is just soo cute!

1. do not get lashes wet for 24 hours

This one is super important! No showering, no sweating, no crying; if it involves getting your lashes wet, do not do it! I normally work out and shower before my appointment because of this. It makes a huge difference. The adhesive needs 24 hours to completely dry so if you wet your lashes within that time frame, then you risk the chance of them falling out faster.

2. do not use oil based products on your lashes

This is another important rule! Make sure that the products you are using on your eyes are oil-free. This includes eye make-up (such as liner and mascara), eye creams, make-up remover, and face wash. Here are a few extension safe products that I’ve discovered over the years:

Make-Up: For liner, I recommend the KVD Tattoo Liner or the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen. For mascara (if needed), try Too Faced Better Than Sex. If we’re being extra and wearing a shimmery shadow, I HIGHLY recommend trying Too Faced Glitter Glue. I’ve been using these products for years and still continue to use them when I have lash extensions.

Skincare and Cleansers: It’s okay to put oils on your face, just try to avoid the eye area. My eye cream is predominately water based, but does have a few oils in it. Because of that, I only put my eye cream under my eyes and completely avoid the lids.

Same situation with makeup remover and face wash. I do not wear makeup every day, but when I do, I will use Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water (the waterproof one) with a lint free lip applicator. This allows me to remove all of my liner and mascara without ruining my lashes. I’ve linked a few water-based face washes that are safe to use on lash extensions, but if you don’t feel like switching cleansers, simply just use a lash shampoo. My lash tech, Maddie, recommended this to me! She said that one of her clients uses this lash shampoo and swears by it (like after 3 weeks, she still doesn’t need a fill)!

3. try to sleep on your back or use an eye mask

If you’re a side sleeper like me, then you know that trying to sleep on your back is HARD! I try my best to sleep on my back but sometimes, it’s just not happening. I recently discovered these eye masks on Amazon that are meant for lash extensions and they actually work! I’m obsessed! Another tip is to sleep on a silk pillow case. This will reduce the friction on your lashes while you sleep.

4. Brush your lashes daily

Wake up, brush. Shower, brush. Brush your lashes – it takes 2 seconds! The most annoying thing is when your lashes are flailing around all over the place. I keep a disposable spoolie in all of my purses, my gym bag, the bathroom, my car, Sabir’s car…literally everywhere! I recently purchased a little fan to use after I shower and it helps a ton – my lashes get nice and fluffy again and don’t lump together. Is in necessary? Prob not, but I think it’s worth it! I also use the fan on my face after applying a setting spray.

5. [optional] use a sealant

This is optional but if you really want to extend your time between fills, try using a sealant. I used to apply one back in the day and noticed a difference in the amount of lashes I had left between fills. I just ordered this one by Bella Lash and plan to use it 2-3x a week. I’ll report back before I get a fill to let you guys know how I like it!
